Head Gardener's tips for September

2nd September 2015

  • Harvest apples as they become ripe, cup the fruits and if they come away easily, they should be ready
  • Keep your glasshouse clean and free from debris, mould and fungus will thrive in damp conditions
  • Remove lower leaves from tomatoes to enable the light to ripen the fruit and increase air circulation
  • Keep feeding containers, tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and chillies to make the most of the remaining summer
  • Collect seed from your borders of perennials and annuals which you want to keep. Dry them on newspaper and store in a brown paper bag
