Spring Update from the Gardens 2026

By Andrew Humphris, Head Gardener

After a very wet winter it is great to see the garden coming alive again. It was also a mild winter and on the whole we would say that flowering is two to three weeks earlier than normal.

It is only mid April and we already have Wisteria and Camassia in flower. Most of the daffodils have finished flowering but the bluebells have taken over and look stunning. The fruit trees are also about to burst so we hope that there are no late frosts.

Everyday new plants are coming into flower and we have had a first rose flower, admittedly on a warm south facing wall but still seems early.

Over the last four years we have planting a range of Clematis and although the alpina varieties are coming to an end we now have the montana’s and koreana’s flowering which are spectacular especially when combined with the apple blossom.

The hard work that is put in in the winter makes it all worth while when the garden comes to life in the spring and it looks like it is going to be another bumper year for flowering and fruiting.
