Textile Exhibition with Jane Robinson
Jane Robinson is a textile artist based in Worthing. Jane enjoys combining mixed media with hand-stitching and using the sewing machine, fusing traditional and contemporary techniques into her own vibrant and colourful style. She says: ‘For this exhibition at Parham House, I have been inspired by the Tudor and Elizabethan portraits in the house. The sumptuous fabrics and designs in the costumes have provided a rich source of ideas that I have developed using a range of different techniques.’

The gardens at Parham House have also triggered ideas for embroideries based on the plants and flowers and the textures of tree-bark. Other themes in the exhibition include the vibrant colour and sparkle of India; I often find that I’m drawn back to Indian designs, and travelling in India has a great influence on how I use colour in my work. Other recurring themes in my work are the textures, colours and shapes of rocks and fossils’.
Jane says: ‘Fabric and colour always fascinated me. An early memory is spreading the family ragbag onto the floor and playing with the colours and textures. I’ve played with fabric ever since. I grew up on the edge of Dartmoor, in an environment where there was no ‘passive entertainment’. We made things, ranging from tin-can rafts to dry-stone walls, beer or stitched textiles, and the habit of having ‘busy hands’ stayed with me for life. Over the years, this early childhood interest developed into a focussed and absorbing occupation.

Jane took three City and Guilds textiles courses over six years, culminating in the Diploma in Stitched Textiles at Missenden Abbey, for which she was awarded the City and Guilds Gold Medal for Excellence. She joined the exhibiting group ‘Five’ and exhibited with them in Worthing, Milton Keynes and Ely Cathedral. She was a founder member of Southdowns Creative Stitchers and oversees their website and social media and runs a Mixed Media group once a month. She is a member of the Seven Threads group. She regularly takes part in other exhibitions such as Ramster Hall Embroidery Exhibition, Worthing Artists Open Houses and others.

Jane will be showcasing her exhibition in the Seed Room from Wednesday 12th August until and on Monday 31st August.
