What to See

The Ante Room

Almost everything in this room is 17th century, including the large gros-point carpet which is thought to be one of the earliest surviving examples of needlework carpets.

The furniture in this room includes two late 17th century walnut armchairs which are covered with contemporary needle work and are set off beautifully by the Hungarian Point needlework curtains hung behind.

The portrait of Charles II is painted by Verelst , surrounded by two of his mistresses, Barbara Villiers and Louise de Kerouaille, and his wife, Catherine of Braganza, painted by Lely.
